MOC Conducts First-Ever Olympic Values Education Programme Teacher Training Workshop
The Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC), in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (NIE), conducted its first-ever Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) – Teacher Training Workshop on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at Shaheed Ali School, Hulhumalé.
The workshop brought together teachers from schools across Malé and marked an important first step in introducing the Olympic Values Education Programme within the local educational context. OVEP is an International Olympic Committee educational initiative that uses the Olympic values, the principles of Olympism and sport as a platform for values-based learning. Its resources are designed to support educators in engaging young people through practical, participatory learning experiences.
The opening ceremony commenced with the recitation of the Noble Qur’an, followed by the National Anthem. MOC Director General Mohamed Jaushan Shareef then provided an introduction to the programme, outlining the purpose of OVEP and the objectives of conducting the teacher training workshop.
The programme was officially opened by the Chief Guest, Dr. Mahamood Shougee, Chancellor of the Maldives National University. In his address, Dr. Shougee described OVEP as a bridge connecting the objectives of the National Institute of Education and the Maldives Olympic Committee, highlighting the common emphasis placed on values and the development of young people through education.
Dr. Shougee spoke about the three core Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship, and reflected on how these values, together with the educational themes promoted through OVEP, complement the values and principles embedded within education.
OVEP builds upon the three core Olympic values through five educational themes: Joy of Effort, Fair Play, Respect for Others, Pursuit of Excellence, and Balance between Body, Will and Mind. These themes are intended to help young people understand and practise the principles of Olympism while developing physical, behavioural, intellectual and social skills.
The workshop was facilitated by MOC Director General Mohamed Jaushan Shareef and Mohamed Sharif, General Secretary of the Maldives Aquatics.
Throughout the programme, participants were introduced to Olympism, the core Olympic values and the five OVEP educational themes. The workshop moved beyond theoretical learning, with interactive discussions, experiential learning activities, reflection and group work designed to demonstrate how Olympic values can be translated into meaningful educational experiences.
Teachers also explored practical ways in which the principles and values of OVEP could be incorporated into teaching, learning and school-based activities. The practical approach reflects the wider OVEP methodology, which encourages educators to adapt activities to their learning environment and use discussion, reflection, collaboration, creativity and problem-solving as part of values-based education.
