Maldives’ men’s beach handball team delivered an encouraging performance against Pakistan at the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, despite falling short in the match.

Facing one of Asia’s top-ranked teams—Pakistan, who are also reigning Commonwealth and South Asian champions—the Maldivian side showed resilience and competitiveness throughout the game. Pakistan secured the win in two sets, with scores of 20–12 and 18–12.

The performance has, however, strengthened confidence within the team. Head coach Zabiullah Islamyar noted that the level displayed by the Maldivian players exceeded expectations, especially against a team of Pakistan’s caliber.

He highlighted that competing at this level and maintaining such performances gives strong belief that Maldives can contend for medals in similar competitions within the next two to three years.

So far in the tournament, Maldives has shown consistent improvement, securing wins against Bangladesh and Mongolia, while also putting up competitive performances against higher-ranked teams.

The coach further emphasized that the experience gained from this tournament will play a key role in the continued development of beach handball in the Maldives.
